We ask you to stand with us, the Garrwa, Gudanji, Marra and Yanyuwa peoples, as our countries, waters, sacred sites, lives and futures are threatened by McArthur River Mine.

We ask you to contact those who are continuing to enable this environmental and social catastrophe that is McArthur River Mine and ask them to implement our simple requests, so that our lands, water and children’s futures may be free of environmental contamination and our sacred sites protected for future generations.

We request five things:

That the Northern Territory Government immediately triple Glencore’s environmental bond for McArthur River Mine from $400 million to $1.5 billion to ensure that there are enough funds to manage the long-term environmental impacts that the mine and waste rock dump will have in the Gulf region;

That a mine closure and rehabilitation plan for the site, which includes the back-filling of the open cut pit in the bed of McArthur River, be developed, costed and made public;

That the Juukan Gorge inquiry of the Commonwealth Joint Standing Committee on Northern Australia be expanded to include the sacred, cultural and archaeological sites impacted on, and threatened, by Glencore at McArthur River Mine;

That the Northern Territory and Australian governments, along with Glencore, recognise that the Garrwa, Gudanji, Marra and Yanyuwa peoples have the right to participate in decision-making in all matters which would affect their rights as Indigenous peoples, through representatives chosen by themselves in accordance with their own procedures, as well as to maintain and develop their own Indigenous decision-making institutions; and

That the Northern Territory and Australian governments urgently provide stable and long-term funding to these Indigenous decision-making institutions.

Jack Green, Nancy McDinny, Stewart Hoosan.
